Asthma Free School Zone is neighborhood-based and school-centered. The AFSZ program works to raise awareness about and guide strategies related to improvement of: local air quality, asthma management, general school-wide health and safety and reduction of exposure to asthma triggers. Nearly 100 schools citywide have participated in the core program since it began on the Lower East Side in 2001. |
| The core program provides durable outdoor signage to designate school zones; gives environmental health and advocacy training to school and community members; guides grass-roots creation and maintenance of safe, healthy school zones in which children are protected from risks associated with poor air quality.

After years of delivering direct service, AFSZ is offering a new expansion model program that enables individual schools to implement and sustain the AFSZ program by themselves and into the future. All NYC schools are eligible for participation in the expansion model program, which will be overseen by School Safety Committee and/or School Leadership Team members with AFSZ resources, training and phone support.
Contact us if your school is interested in the expansion program.
